You might laugh, but I can almost guaranty you a proper diesel would double the sales of the Mustang in Europe . Its mostly German competitors are mostly sold with a diesel as well. Hybrid, not so much.

Imagine a European who's a potential Mustang buyer. He's going to cross shop the Mustang with other cars, obviously. What kind of cars? I'm guessing BMW 4-series (M, but also the lesser ones), Audi A5, cars like that. And they're mostly sold with diesels. These cars might be much more expensive than the Mustang in the US, I'm betting the price difference will be far smaller in Europe. Besides, a very large percentage of vehicles of almost any not-tiny (Fiat 500) class are sold with a diesel here. The majority, usually.

Here's the money quote:

“We’re not looking at diesel at the moment, but given where we need to go with fuel consumption we are looking at all our options,” he revealed.

“And diesel is one of those options, along with hybrids and electric.”

However Mr Fascetti refused to divulge any specifics as to what is being looked at, such as powertrain specifics or market timing for such vehicles.

Since my day job for now entails covering the world of business, I'll clue you in to what we call a "fiduciary duty statement." Basically it means that they'll always say they'll always keep their options open for the health of the business. No matter what.

That's what this sounds a lot like. It doesn't sound like THE MUSTANG COULD GET A HYBRID SYSTEM AND A DIESEL. It sounds like Ford is always looking at all options to sell the most amount of cars. That's why the new Mustang comes with a turbo-4.

So is it possible? Yes. Is it plausible? Eh, not really, not right now, I don't think. I'd wait for a more definitive statement to go with the headline you provided.

Enthusiasts are idiots.

You mean nothing to grand sales.

A diesel expands its popularity in Europe and a hy-kers style hybrid expands its performance credence while also being more EPA friendly.

Kinja'd!!!1

It makes complete sense.

A hybrid is more likely a performance hybrid aka KERS to give more fun times when you need it and fuel efficiency second.

A diesel expands your market and opens you up to many shoppers who actively look for diesel options.

Also, all that torque in a RWD layout? Kinda hard to say no to that, especially when Mustangs are DDs and DDs need more usable torque and generous efficiency than they do screaming high redlines and 679090903 horsepower.

Well, by could , I said just that, it could get a diesel or a hybrid, or it could not, I know that using may , would've made a more honest title, but I wanted to have a small dose of sensationalism in it, as most people are getting bored of Mustang news, already.

So who is cross shopping the Mustang then? In Europe that is. I honestly wouldn't know what else. Sure, BRZ and the like, but those are very rare and if its them Ford is targeting I imagine I won't be seeing many Mustangs.

The outcasts. People who were already buying M3s back in the E30 days and are disappointed by the softness of newer models, Camaro owners (they may be few, but they're the reason for which the Mustang is now exported), Nissan Z-car owners, and the 23 people who were going to buy a Mustang from Geiger Cars or any similar importer.

They've already claimed that only 10% of the production is heading overseas. That means 10,000 cars per year. It's almost sure that the majority of those cars are heading Australia (something will have to fill the gap left by the F6s and Falcon GTs, and eventually also the XR8s). Doesn't leave a lot for the rest of the world.

If the diesel is like one of the recent BMW M Diesels, awesome.

If the hybrid is like the upcoming NSX, 918, P1, LaFerrari, etc., awesome.

If the Hybrid is like a Prius or the Diesel is like a Jetta diesel (unless they do a 2.0 EcoBoost-esque diesel, which would be double awesome), GTFO.

I can see a diesel Mustang in the future; in 2021 when CAFE standards are up past 50mpg, a diesel will let Ford continue to have a high-torque medium-rpm engine that fits the GT without it having to be the size of a modern 1/2-ton pickup.

EU market is 50% diesel or more due to taxation brakes... and 'sporty' Diesels do exist. It's one way to get a lot of grunting torque without a massive engine.

Kinja'd!!! Alex87f > Victorious Secret

There's another thing, which is that in Europe, company cars are much more common than in the USA.

Normally, the employee is given a leasing price range and can choose whatever car he wants as long as the company agrees with it, and that's it's either a diesel or a hybrid.

The reason for this is that companies get a higher VAT deduction on diesel (100% in most cases) than on petrol (usually 80% max, except for hybrids). This rule comes from the 70's , when governments promoted diesel as part of an initiative aimed at reducing dependance on imported oil, especially from arab countries (think OPEC crisis).

So if you don't have a diesel or a hybrid, you're shutting yourself out of the company car market.

One could argue that this is now a bit obsolete but -at least in France- carmakers strongly lobby against changing this because they're good at making diesel engines, but not very good at making petrol engines.

I'd consider it very plausible given they want to market the new Mustang as a world car.

The base/budget model is probably going to compete with cars like the Audi A5/TT, BMW 4series or Mercedes C-Class Coupe, maybe also the Renault Laguna Coupe. ALL of these are available with at least one Diesel engine and manual or auto transmission getting 30 mpg or more.

If Ford wants big sales in Europe, they'll need to have a Diesel - they wouldn't even have to develop a new one, just take one form the S-Max/Galaxy or Mondeo (Fusion).

Diesel sounds great. Probably won't be the Power Stroke, but I'd love to hear that diesel rumble from a Mustang.

Hybrid or electric versions?
